We recently had our landscaping installed, and my patience seems to be taking on an obstacle course. I'm an instant gratification kinda gal when I unload a lot of dough. So instead of taking it out on the lil crape myrtles and their friends, I found these gardens to temporary call my own. A lot of our home is still in my head as it costs less. I imagine what it's supposed to look like instead of how it is now; my eyes are thankful. So in my head, this is our yard.

Wow, I have to thank you all for your prayers this past week. Good news, Art is back in the comforts of his own home, as of Saturday evening. It was definitely a rollercoaster of a week: from bad, to nightmarish, and then a good closure of the week. Although none of us would have chosen to be there at the hospital this past week, we all came out with something learned and a stronger bond than ever. Family being family. That's the best it gets.

Again, thank you! I can't wait to catch up on all of your blogs (I haven't even been on the net in daaayyyyysssss). It's been so long, but prayerfully I'll be able to finish up some projects around here and make some posts!

Please continue to keep the fam in your prayers. Home Healthcare Svcs will be in and out a couple of days throughout the week ongoing, but it's still our job as family to support recovery and one another.

Please keep Bryan's Pop and family in your prayers. Although I might be scorned for posting this, I'd rather ask for prayers than not. Why? Because The Lord answers them! He is currently in the hospital (as of Saturday morn) battling a couple of things, not to mention that he's been battling cancer for the past year and a half. We're praying for comfort and for him to go home this week.

Harvest Time

I love this cool, crisp air. I lie. I lie. I lie. I love hot chocolate, warm fires, suggles, food, harvest fun, and laughs. the stuff that comes with the cool, crisp air.

I've never really been a fan of Halloween. Well, growing up it wasn't celebrated, but I still got to dress up as a little kid. Exhibit A - my mom made the costume. It was the best Rainbow Brite costume ever - I still have an award that I won for it. But the costume went missing over the years. Was I not the palest toehead ever?

I think that being so official with the costume started my love for "official" design. I'm not really a half-way-there kinda gal. Half-way-there drives me nuts (which is why my house still drives me nuts-O)! Soon, Rachel, soon.

You know the big spread in the Fall Pottery Barn catalog? My heart jumps out for it. But alas, it was not meant to be. Maybe next year. when. i. have. a. job. I tried to get creative this year and make some inexpensive pizz-azz. I'm not really a Halloween kinda gal, hence nothing goulish. But I love just a touch of fall! Whaddya think?

I grabbed a basket from around the house and added some hay ($1), bouquet leaves from the local grocery ($3), decorative pumpkins ($20), ribbon (free), and carved a little sign (free), and the Jacks were a gift (free). 24 buckaroos that I can always reuse! Take away the jacks, and you totally have double-duty fall decor! But next year, Pottery Barn, I will totally rival your spread. Watch it!

Rain Check

It might do me a bit of good to check the weather before refinishing a piece and sticking it outside to dry. Granted, it was a couple of days ago and it's in its final resting place, but I hadn't gotten the outdoor sealant on just yet! It seems to be holding up well though.

Off to take another bath. This is how I warm up! I'm fuh-ruh-eezing! Can you hear my teeth chattering? What is the temp? 61, precisely. I've come to the conclusion that I'm a chicken.

Neighborly Inspiration

Or is it more like a kick in the tail? We had a street gathering last week with all of the neighbors for Fall. This is one of the thing I love about this neighborhood; everyone's so friendly and well, neighborly. That doesn't happen much in the city anymore. It's generally a progressive thing: moving along through various neighbors home for different courses. I love that we have original owners, people that have lived here for 50 years, and newbies like us.

There are quite a few people that bought around the same time, from the original owners. We are in that group. Of course, we all chat about the things we've done, reasons why we didn't buy the other's homes, etc. Suffice it to say, everyone was intimidated of the amount of work that would have to go into out home and purchased another. That feels great, right? Not really, sometimes it can make you feel like a sucker. But then, it also makes you thankful that you didn't purchase the house down the street and find out that you had to redo all of the plumbing!

Long story, well, long, dessert was served at a newbies home, and they've only had to do cosmetic changes. Oh how nice! Dreamy that would be! They had the same louvered doors in the kitchen and baths as we do and gave them a quick face lift by making them recessed.

Take a few frustrations and combine them with a saws-all and you'll have those little slats out in no time. Once the spackle dried in the grooves, I cut some MDF to place on the back. I used mirror adhesive (because I had it and knew it'd grip) to place the board and clamp it, so I could easily nail it. Painting was the toughest part to ensure there were no drips. I painted a coat, sanded, and painted another.

My camera battery died so I was only able to capture 1 in-progress picture.

The after...honestly, I really don't know if I like them yet, but I'm getting used to them.

Productivity Levels are Rising

They can only go up from here! Now that Hubby is back at work full-time, I need to be much more productive in blog land. I have to apologize, I haven't had much time for posting lately, the 'net, or anything really. While the DH was at home, we only accomplished a few small things. We tried to spend some good 'ol fashioned quality time together - which is probably a once in a lifetime occurrence until we retire. It's weird not having him around the house with me, especially now that the rain has come. And, it's weird for me to be at home still.

As for me, I get to focus on myself now and the direction I'm going in career-wise. We'll see what happens. It's still very open-ended. Change is good; clarity is better.

While I focus on the repairs and renovations of this place, I'm trying to remember that while this may be my home, My Eternal Home is being prepared for me elsewhere. I think as women, we tend to go into a crazy, nesting mode and forget that it has no eternal value. Until I am able to have gatherings and fellowship with others in my home and recognize Our Father's blessings, I will always wonder if the work is worth it.

It sometimes feels silly to me to get on here and talk about lamps or chairs or whatever is happening around the house, as I feel it adds no value to your day. However, I can't get on here and script out the latest sermon, bout with faith, or whatnot. I've vowed to be true and sometimes silence is what is needed before I confuse everyone around me. Hopefully, we'll pick up where we left off and move forward again.

DIY Circle Mirrors

I'm one to think that trends are just that. I'm also one that doesn't splurge on trends - mainly for budgetary purposes, but also because I like change, A LOT. If you love something, and I do mean love, go ahead and splurge. But if you know it's only puppy love, try to figure out a more cost-effective way of creating it yourself. Exhibit A: Circle mirrors for a temporary breakfast area.

You'll need:
(2) $5 mirrors from Target
Cross-Stitch Loops {I got mine at Hobby Lobby}
Wood glue
Stain or spray paint
Wire cutters
Moulding

My budget - $25

Time - 1 hour, plus finishing

Lay out your circles in the design of choice. Remember, you will be cutting these so don't give yourself too much work. in other words, don't create tiny joints. Forgive the plastic bag on the ceiling - it is now textured.

Get to cutting. Keep your circles laid out the entire time. {Tip: Start cutting where the metal closure is. Rip out and wood glue back together if necessary.}

Glue the pieces - place a large book on the larger circles for proper adherence. {Tip 2: Clean up your wood glue at this point. I didn't do this and my finish is a bit more rough due to that. Aaaaand cleaning up with a razor blade took f o r e v e r.} Clearly, it took me more than a minute to buy trim... I just wanted to soak up the time I had with Hubby while he was home. In other words, it was his fault. Kidding!

Finish. Add trim. I found this at Home Depot & used a chop saw to cut it. You could paint or stain before - I didn't know which I wanted to use until after it was together. Keeping it real - I didn't take any of the junk out of the picture.

Hang. Enjoy. Eat Breakfast. or Waffles for dinner. don't tell my husband.

Sit, Stay

While the title of the post sounds like a prelude to another puppy post, I can assure you it is not. However, Sydney's head has grown quite large; I think we'll have trouble pulling the bucket away from her head next time she goes on the prowl.

It's Fall! It's harvest time - cool, crisp air has arrived. Let the parties begin! Hopefully I'll be able to soon - as the black hole that has been our dining room, has chairs on order!

Believe it or not, it's none of the chairs I've posted about before! It generally doesn't take me a long time to pick out furnishings, but the dining area proved to be difficult to remain inside of a teeny, tiny budget. While adding up the cost of the new dining chairs yesterday, I decided I couldn't justify the cost, just yet. I am the person that cannot justify purchases in general, much less those that cost more than a bale of hay. I'm furnishing an entire house so while the chairs were practical for almost anyone in the hunt, for us they were not.

Seriously, I shout praises for Decorpad. This morning while browsing through posts, I noticed some different chairs than I'd previously seen. Thanks Freckles Chick! I showed the picture and price to Bryan. He was more than enthusiastic. I lie, but he was willing to run up the street to Sears with me; I was skeptical considering the name of the chairs - Country?. I'm also not the gal that makes big purchases without knowing that my husband's on board and can live with the purchase.

I ordered 4 regular parsons, and 2 wingback parsons. They're a little more trad than I wanted with the arched back and top, but with more modern touches in the room, it'll be perfect. At half the price than the custom chairs were, I think I'll be okay with a little curve. I'm not used to curves, sorry! The little knob in the leg gives a throw to the table legs, too. The chair legs will need to be touched up - a bit darker - they're lighter than the picture shows. And they're shouting for nailheads if I ever want to change them up. I've quieted their shouts though, for now. The fabric is sort of a raw linen that can easily be transitioned with the seasons. Check 'em out!

Last night, I heard Bryan laughing hysterically & calling my name in the living room. This is what I arrived to!

And yes, watching her walk around with this trying to find the best way to lick the bucket dry was hilarious! She really didn't care about the tub on her face, rather anything she could get out of it.

That poor girl worked so hard and probably didn't get anything, so B helped her out a bit.

Good thing this happened, I've just added a toenail trim to tomorrow's To Do's!

Take a Seat & Give Your Opinion

This afternoon the doorbell rang, and I found a little package at the door. I opened it to find about 5% of the remaining chandelier parts. Seriously! They're terrible, and I find it quite weird that they came highly recommended. But they sent me a magnetic cell phone holder to make up for it. Great, I'll stick a bright green flashing thing on my dashboard so that I can remember that the flashy, crystal supposed to be hanging from the ceiling 4 months ago is still on the floor! Isn't it weird how it was my favorite purchase for the house and it's turned into a nightmare? rhetorical. don't answer - that's not the question that i'm looking for an opinion on.

However, I received another package in the mail that has restored my faith in online vendors. Fabric swatches for the dining chairs!!

As I mentioned, I sold the chairs that came with our table, for way too little - my mistake. About 15 people inquired within a matter of minutes, and they were gone in a flash. Exactly like I wanted, but I didn't realize that I could've gotten double what I sold them for. Kind of like when you sell a bunch of stock and then the price rises a few dollars the next day...yeah...

I've narrowed the selections down to Sally White fabic, and I'm leaning toward the silver nailhead.

The predicament:

I really like two chairs.

The first is Madison. Clean lines, kick-pleat skirt.

Height: 40" Width: 20" Depth: 26" Seat Depth: 17" Seat Height: 20"

The second is Vegas. Notched, tapered legs. $50 higher price tag.

Height: 41" Width: 20" Depth: 25" Seat Height: 20" Seat Depth: 17"

Opinions? And yes, I've thought about combining the 2. These are somewhat forever chairs so I want to make the best decision possible. Also since I'm frugal, spending this amount of money is out of my comfort zone. I realize normal chair pricing is $250 - $350, and upwards from there...so these are considered a steal. For anyone else I could make this sort of decision, but not when it comes to myself.

As a side note, I joined Facebook again...I kept it on an old email address for less commitment though. Is it me, or is it normal to give play-by-plays of your life... or to be wayyy bitter and try to create an army... Not everyone, just about 75%. Maybe it's just me and my initial impressions. Just an observation. I think I'm going to tip-toe out now!

Here are a few projects I'm working on right now, all are unfinished as you can see - keeping it real. And yes, I promise to share the bedroom soon. I tend to like to keep things to myself for a good while.

A new-to-us table, FINALLY! I'll refinish the top a darker color. I sold the matching chairs within 5 minutes on C-list, and for way too little. Oh well - they're gone. I'm still waiting for the fabric swatches to arrive so that I can order parsons chairs from a little place I found online.

And a sneak peak at the dining wall stencil!

How To Make a Bed Skirt

Before I show you some of the completed projects of the bedroom, I need to taunt you with another little project, one that can completely transform your space.

An exposed bed frame sticks out like a sore thumb like having your undergarments displayed for the world to see. After searching PB, JCP, RH, HG and others home goods stores for frugal finds, I decided they were non-existent. When I bought the headboard material, I decided to get something coordinating but not too matchy-matchy. This will also allow for me to coordinate with other headboard fabric possibilities in the future, like the IKAT I tried to track down forever. Seems no one has the one I'm looking for - only a similar fabric at $65/yard which I was not willing to buy. Hello?? I'm Miss Frugal Mamma. So I went a lot more traditional than I would have liked to stay within an almost non-existent budget, but it works.

First wash the material. I think this is the first-time ever that I've actually done this before making something, but I didn't want the skirt to shrink if I ever need to throw it in the wash. Thankfully, our wedding gift to ourselves has a sweet dial with a speed wash selection. Phew!

While I washed the skirt fabric, I located an old queen sized sheet and ironed out all major wrinkles. I then cut the measurements to the size of the mattress, which in my case was 76 x 80. Once that was cut, my skirt fabric was dry. I cut 3 strips of fabric long enough for the 3 sides and hemmed the bottom using my sewing machine. You could use fabric tape, but I wasn't sure how this type of fabric would like it.

Then I pinned the 3 panels together, ensuring the bottom seam lined up and sewed them together.

Once those were together, I measured again, probably the 47th time, the length that would be needed and ironed a crease 15.5" up, following with a quick pin-up of fabric of the panel that would be at the foot of the bed to the correlating side of sheet. FYI, having fabric that had a sbtle stripe in it help me to not confuse which side needed to go where.

Then I began sewing. Once sewed, I draped it on the bed and pinned the remainder of the sheet around the box springs to ensure a snug fit. This took the longest time, basically to ensure that there was a snug fit.

Completed version of above.

I cut the sides a bit longer than the box spring length, due to the fact that I still wanted to cover the railing that would play peekaboo. Once I draped my completed bed skirt, I stapled it (temporary fix) to the headboard.

One tiny hidden staple makes a world of a difference.

And there you have it, a custom bed skirt for only the cost of material needed. And I had a bit extra fabric to make pillow envelopes!

You could add really snazzy touches, which I'll probably add pleats one day when I get bored. Or you could add trim, ruffles; the limit is your imagination. I just wanted something simple, quick and inexpensive.

We're getting there - I just need to have copies of our wedding prints made and install closet doors. Yippee!

Formal Living

Here's the after of some of the productivity that's taken place in the past month. The formal living sat, forever it seems, in a blank state. I like blank slates, I don't like blank states, especially when my brain is involved. Here's the formal I've been keeping to myself for the past couple of weeks.

We bought the couch, chair and tables when we got married. I went with a more contemporary feel in the apartment, as it had a pretty cool and modern kitchen (much unlike our current yuckiest kitchen ever). As I said, I like blank slates. The white velvet & espresso tables = blank slate. I have so many thoughts of all the different things I could do, my brain resembles a skittles commercial that involves raining rainbows. Versatility!

I was searching for a dining table at CCA, and instead found this chair. I scored it for a whopping $150, as compared to this chair at Restoration Hardware for 15 times as much. The horse chess piece was a find that same day at Hemispheres. It had a scratch, that had already been repaired mind you, so they marked off $100. Sweet.

As I mentioned previously the lamp was a real booger to put together. But the garden stool completely made up for that stress... ringing in at $7. With a new coat of paint, it's perfection!

I had the pillow fabric for quite some time, but there were other things on the list that took priority. It was such a relief to get them made.

One thing I've learned just buying the pieces in this room is that frugality generally requires time. The things I scored at a lesser price (95% of this room) required MUCH more time, than just going to pick up something that I had in mind. Using things from around the house that aren't being used or could fit better elsewhere is almost as good as finding cash in the attic though. If you're itching for a redo with little to no budget, try reorganizing things around the house.

So for now, it's done. For now could mean the next couple of days though knowing me. I'd love to get this rug from JCP when we install wood floors (but my little pig will probably take off in flight before then) and eventually put up moulding. But there are other rooms to be completed and a dining room table STILL to buy.

Got to go! The hubby is demanding a height measurement redo! This has been the topic of conversation in the house for the past few days since he finally made his entrance to Home Depot with me and saw those snazzy measuring posts...which apparently were more accurate than he would have liked.

All Over the Place

I just returned from a picnic lunch with the Hubs. It seems there's always something new around the corner. Lately, we've experienced a few more road bumps so it's good to get that much needed time in to talk and reflect on the simple things in life.

I've always loved simplicity in it's organic state. Hey now, diamonds are organic too. So yes, they qualify. We live in a concrete jungle really, and nature's not at it's finest in Dallas so parks and gardens are where we get the good stuff. Exhibit A: Grapevine Botanical Gardens. My DH works nearby so it was just a short jaunt over.

Packing up lunch, I thought about how much I ~~hated our kitchen and wanted to win a free makeover for it~~ loved doing this for my husband. For 3 years I had done this for 30 people, and few even thought to say thank you. I knew love was going into this and that it would be refreshing for his day. To celebrate something called the lunch hour.

May I say that Grapevine has the sweetest gals ever. They say HI to you, ask you how you're doing, they smile. I must admit, I was completely thrown off. I'm not used to this. I'm used to avoidance. Maybe it was that they saw familiarity in a face that stays at home, but loves to visit 3 Piece (I've officially dubbed that to be B's rapper name) at lunch. Maybe it was the big flower on my shirt that made them happy. ~~Is it too cliche to wear a flower shirt to a garden because I swear I didn't plan it.~~ But hopefully, it was the giggles and squeals of their children delighting in God's beautiful gardens. I have realized lately more than ever that children may not be part of our future together, that God may have not chosen for us to be parents, but that I will forever be thankful to see the glee on the face of a little one.

Upon returning home, I was taking a few pictures of a couple of projects. Then it dawned on me... I love our lights! Have I ever told you how much? They romanced me and conned me into buying this place after all. They told me all kinds of stories about the history of the home. They're beautifully etched. At night it's almost as though we have disco balls in the entry and hallway. And disco balls are organic right? No? Oh, they were just born in the organic era - the era they teach as civil movements and rock and roll.

Here's a sneak peek at the formal with sweet P-nut in the background. The lamp was a JCP clearance find that was a disaster to put together. The garden stool was $7 at Salvation Army and needed a coat of spray paint to show it's beauty. And, the pwetty, pwetty pillows were a creation by Yours Truly.

Facelift

We've added some botox to the front of our house since the last post. I was able to hang window boxes and planters, as well as the shutters I made.

In no time, these window boxes should be dripping over with those red flowers, just like the hanging baskets!

I was also able to install a peep hole so I could see who is actually paying us a visit! Who knew that $10 is all a peep hole costs? Not me.

We've even got a new front door handle, which my dad showed me how to install. It reminds me of the Dove chocolate that they were handing out yesterday at church. Rich & creamy, with a bit of raspberry. Well, maybe not the raspberry part, but it was so decadent that I need another. And this handle is just so pretty that you could serve it up on a platter!

On to the landscaping & touching up the paint!!!

But to even think that this is all I've been doing, I would suggest that you're CRAZY. The formal living is coming together nicely, and the master bedroom/bathroom is getting it's glam on! More on those later! Wow, I'm beginning to feel like this place is actually a home that we live in, not just where we hang our boots at night - what a concept!

Keep Up

While my husband and I were getting quotes on our kitchen renovation, we also decided to have our contractor take a look at a few other projects around the house. One of those aesthetic projects turned into an emergency, spend thousands of dollars project. But of course, what else would happen here right? Just another thing to put a damper on the kitchen remodel, and another thing to make us think about our next home purchase.

Our curb appeal wasn't very glammy or tempting or anything really. It didn't exist. We wanted to spruce it up a bit, modernize it. We had plans. Turns out, plans actually had us. The front porch overhang was leaning - thankfully our contractor noticed. However, this meant ripping out the concrete, installing piers, pouring new slab, etc. The post that were holding the house up were actually dangling. Yes, dangling!

While they had the bobcat, we asked for them to remove all of our overgrown bushes. But Bryan got a headstart himself.

Most of the work was actually completed while we were on vacation so there really aren't many during pictures. But here's what we left it as.

I bought a gallon of stain at Lowe's and played games with the weather since it clearly didn't like the shade I picked or something, as it rained throughout that next week. But I didn't let it slow me down.

As I type this, I hear someone punching glass. Yes, our neighbors caught the bug that we're infected with and are replacing all of their windows today.

Speaking of windows, I was able to make some shutters over the weekend. to hang.

I've bought these window boxes to place under ours. I plan on having dripping red flowers flowing from them.

And these hanging baskets for the porch, to go with the bench that I purchased 50% off and the table that my father and I made. Yay for new mortar - it makes that stone look so much better.

Yesterday, we added to our spending spree and had a complete sprinkler makeover. I've been hiding the shed from you that our box was previously in. That will come later...but it shouldn't be a surprise that it ran via extension cord. We had an electrician out last week to move install a couple of 110s in the garage, b/c of course the garage opener ran via extension cord as well. We also installed motion detectors, ceiling fans, and a porch light. Once the sprinkler panel was placed in the garage...

...they began work on the french drain & installing new sprinkler heads.

I'm excited about the landscaping going in and am in hopes that it will turn out something like this. Not sure if we'll go purple with the asters, but I still really like the dreaminess and escape just looking at the pic brings.

All because we wanted cedar posts...

Desire To Inspire always has such amazing features. Recently, XTEN Architechture was featured. I had to dig deeper on this one!

Have you ever see something so incredible it makes your heart skip a beat, your stomach begins to churn and you just want to throw-up. I know, I know, sounds more like a first date than real estate. However, that's exactly what this set makes me want to do. It's swoon worthy. My knees are weak. Luckily, I'm sitting down.

Being away from this blog for so long really took a toll on me. I don't journal so this is the only form of getting it out, clearing my head, my thoughts. I knew starting this blog, that along with it would come ups and downs, and things that seemed insurmountable. I knew that transparency and vulnerability might be too close for comfort at times. But I also knew that I needed to plug through those times. Aren't those times when others around you can be touched, by being on the outside looking in and seeing the providence of God at work?

Bryan & I enrolled ourselves in a class called Quest at the church we're currently attending. Shout out to IBC! Taking a leap of faith and leaving the church we had attended for years was not easy in the least. Amidst everything going on in our lives, did we really need to uproot and start another process? During Family Business at the beginning of service, they were covering the Toolbox classes for the summer. When Quest: Pursuing His Purpose, Classes begin June 24 popped up on the screen, they began to tug. My heart strings, that is. I KNEW without a shadow of a doubt that I needed my tush to occupy one of those seats every single Sunday evening for as long as it lasted.

Needless to say, it started out with a bang...woohoo...I could really know what God intended for my life by the end of this class. Are you sure? And then, it became very hard, very quickly. It was time for me to go through my entire life and list each chapter: things you excelled at/enjoyed, heroes, peaks and valleys. I was a crazy mess for a couple of weeks there. It was one of the hardest things I've been through in my life, to face it all again. This is where people around me recognized, just b/c she is blonde and has a high metabolism rate doesn't mean that she's lived the ideal life. This is when transparency became SCARY. At the end of that section, it was incredible to see number 1: how stunned people were when they heard my story, and number 2: the outpouring of love, encouragement, and support that ensued. People were touched. And that is when it makes the turbulence worth it. .sort of. It will only be worth it when I know that I am fulfilling His purpose. And perfect timing... studying the scriptures of Ruth was our new series we began at church that evening. I do think God chuckles with His perfect timing. I've always loved that book. Moving on...

It was time to form our purpose statements. While others had zeroed in on a particular ministry for themselves, mine remained generic. I wrestled with that a bit. But hey, it's who I am. And for that, I cannot and will not be ashamed. It doesn't mean that it's easy though - I wanted specific!! You can't always get what you want...but if you try sometimes, you just might find...you get what you can...

I'm about to read a book called Why You Can't Be Anything You Want to Be by Arthur F. Miller. There are many things I could do, but don't necessarily enjoy. I have a resilience about myself because of a few dynamic situations in life that I'll do it because I have to, I'll learn to be good at it, the bills will be paid. I can "chamelion" myself in scenarios, I can become that which I need to. However, I just need to be what God intended. I do believe that He gives us dreams so that we can fulfill them for His Glory. But I haven't a clue as to what makes me tick. not ONE clue. and. that's. a. big. thing. to. admit.

My dear, sweet Madi! We spent so much good time together while on vacation that I'm starting to have withdrawals! She was born in May. so was I. She doesn't like Mexican food. neither do I. She doesn't like the ocean. needless to say, I'm terrified of it. She's a good level-headed girl that doesn't buy into the teeny bopper stuff! But she does buy things in my size now, which absolutely freaks me out!! She's silly and wears my heels sometimes, but I'm glad that she falls over so that I can keep her as young as possible for as long as possible! Struggling

At this point, I'm completely struggling as to how to have a blog without sharing bits of my own life on it. Bear with me. However, I've apparently made some that are close to me unhappy with what I've said (or what they read WAY too far into b/c I think what I've said is quite boring and uneventful if you ask me). *Sigh* I can't even be myself on my own blog, and with the plans of bettering it, I can't even begin to get there. At this time, I'm leaning towards not continuing. I'd rather lose a hobby than unintentionally create havoc in my personal life. The one thing I'm sad about is branching out to others that desire to walk closer to Him, and encouraging them in their journeys. I really enjoyed the few buddies that I made along the way.

Be in The Light! Don't let the little things, although they may seem large at the time, get you bogged down. You never know who's watching how you lead your life and how you act when you find yourself in the midst of unwanted doubt and uncertainty.

It's been while, hasn't it? I do plan on coming back. We're heading out for a quick, but very MUCH needed vacation {insert sigh of relief here}. I do have some great material for the blog, although I really haven't been picking up the camera too much as of late.

There has been a lot happening in and around the F household {edited for my other half - he forgets our last name sometimes and thinks I'm mentioning all of the relatives}. Please keep us in your prayers; there's a lot on our plate right now, good and bad. However, at this point I'm just thankful I have a plate to begin with. But The Lord uses everything for His good and purpose. Though I may not understand our future - He does!

Hopefully, we'll find ourselves here most of the time...

...although I wouldn't be surprised if Bryan found himself here one day (while I'm at the Restoration Hardware outlet)...
...but I'll definitely be catching many beautiful sunsets; that's certain!!

I know, I know...I promised pictures so long ago that the end result doesn't even compare to the wait! But, here's a reminder of how our bath looked before with it's psychedelic peas and carrots wallpaper, alongside a nice, CLEAN after. Well, sorta of after...I've still got some paint touch-ups and clean ups to take care of so don't be too critical! And let's face it, nothing's ever complete in my house, or few things rather. So yes, it needs to be properly accessorized yet.

I'm a white and grey kind of girl, but threw in some color for the hubs, a nice beachy blue. Since the reno is cleaning out our pockets (although this space was more design on a dime), this might be all of the beach we see for some time. We were able to save on the cabbys though & give them a fresh coat of Du Jour. The mirror was recycled from the master bedroom and given a new moulding frame. Everything else is new (or at least new to us via Salvation Army).

I heard this song on the way in to work this morning, and immediately thought this is it. It is the current rant that takes place inside my brain. Modern day Christians are far too guilty of this - we've bled into this despicable Hollywood culture of apologizing for our Foundation of Life, while compromising our faith to fit in with others around us! It's pitiful really. Below are a few verses of encouragement, or a kick in the rear, to get in gear. I do not want to displease The Lord, and I do far too often. If I live and put aside my faith while going throughout my day, I'm threadbare in the eyes of The Lord. I must make a conscious decision to focus on Him throughout my day, to pray without ceasing, instead. So often we get wrapped up in the silly strappings of life, but we must not forget the glory of Our Lord.

I officially took the plunge and went to the gym, just short of a full-fledged meltdown. Seriously, big ol' crocodile tears welled up in my eyes. I didn't know if I could do this again. Thoughts began to race through my head, terrible what ifs. (What if I have to go to crazy doctors again that tell me it's my third eye that's not functioning (and diagnose me with something I've already been diagnosed with like they're smart or something) and then began to pound vigorously on my back and head with some crazy vibrating thing and make me feel thisbig & then charge me thismuch and prescribe me ~~cow bones~~ bovine pineal glands. Seriously, that happened, crazy.) But I digress. Bryan coaxed me out of the car, finally, and I made my way in ~~freaking out inside~~ with a smile on my face because that's what I do. Milestone moment. It wasn't too bad - I tranced out on ~~the weird stuff they put in the vents to make people come back~~ something I'm sure. 1 baby step at a time. And back at home, I think I ate everything I could find because yeah, that's what I do when I work out...

Granted, it's not tufted, but I'd consider this puppy on the cheap compared to similar products? It's from Overstock; there aren't any reviews as of yet so I'm weary to purchase 6 of them & be disappointed. It's supposedly made of linen & has pretty little nailhead trim. I guess since my husband deems me the Queen of Returns, I could buy & return it if I don't like it.

Here's another from Great Indoors. It's fairly priced as well. Still no tufted-ness. I have seen this in person, and it has beautiful fabric and wood. I'm just confused as to what table I'd pair it with at the moment since it has wood trim. FYI, I have a small table budget.

I don't think it's any secret that Bryan & I love the west coast. It holds a special place in our hearts. I secretly daydream of moving that way at least once a week. Sunset Magazine has wonderful idea houses on their site! It's a must to check them out! Here's a barn that's a mix of contemporary and rustic. LOVE IT! Gives a whole new meaning to the saying Were you raised in a barn? I actually have been in a barn that someone lived in & I'd say it was pretty cool, but this one definitely is the winner.

Okay, this is getting a little eery now. I like to check up on the local MLS listings every now and then to see what's happening in the neighborhood. Lo and behold I stumbled upon another place that we checked out for a wedding location, Willowood Ranch, & it's for sale. It's about 45 minutes north of Dallas, and that was the ultimate reason that we decided no so that we were not responsible for guests driving wayyy out into the boonies. Granted they had a few cabins (if that's what you want to call them, more like small homes), but not enough for all of the guests.

It looks like it's turning into Hotel Week around here.

In the midst of my weekly west coast daydream, I thought I'd pull up the lovely hotel Bryan & I were married at, Heritage House Inn, in Little River, CA. (It's the Garden of Eden as far as I'm concerned: Wine Country, meets Headlands on Hwy 1, meets Redwood Forest. If Seabiscuit can live there, so can I. But the land lot prices were ridiculous - don't think we didn't drive by and pick up flyers while we were there.) How could I get the URL wrong? If only that were the case. I did a search to find the new URL; maybe GHM set up a new one when they transitioned the property. NO! This is what the search pulled up!

Heritage House lost; gets no bailout

While there are a record number of bank-owned residences in Mendocino County, none compare to the Heritage House.

You may remember it from Same Time, Last Year or Murder She Wrote. It was originally a cluster of homes turned hotel suites so each cottage is different architecture-wise. Obviously, they have been renovated since then - that's actually what put the new owner under. 30 million dollars in loans; just crazy! After further research, it was up for sale this time last year for 50 million. Now the courthouse couldn't even auction it off for a cool 18.2 mil. If only I had 18 mil sitting on the back burner just waiting to be used; I'd snatch up this little jewel in a heartbeat!
Here's to HHI - please someone get it's feet back on the ground so hubby & I can visit memory lane.

It's getting warmer! You know what that means - bathing suit season. Kidding, this is completely not one of those posts. Outdoor fun, hammocks, and gardening!!! Yesterday evening after dinner, I was able to sit outside for a bit and flip through catalogs for outdoor conversation sets. I'm ready for the toilet to return to it's throne and replace it with a conversation set, bistro and flowers. I think I've narrowed it down. There are 3 different styles that I like, but I'm leaning towards one in particular. Can you guess?

One thing I've realized recently, I have virtually no red in my house, except for a terrible rug by the back door (which luckily was a $7 Goodwill find) that makes me want to vomit every time I see it. I think it's a good thing because I don't like cliches, but that's another subject. I struggled for so long when we had our apartment and I had those red lamps. Everytime I walked into the living room, a war was going on inside my head to determine if I actually liked them or not. The room was cohesive and pretty, but I longed for a different color. So, my goal is to tastefully add some cheery red to the outdoors. Hopefully I won't start to shake and get quesy every time I see the color. Baby steps. It can't be blue, green, grey, and white everywhere. Or can it? I plan to do some drive-bys in the area this weekend and will post pics soon, along . There are some beauties out there, which gives me more motivation to get started on the vanilla exterior. Vanilla is good, but it needs a dash of embellishment to call it perfection. And by embellishment, I mean ripping out firmly rooted bushes, busting concrete, and knocking down timbers! What? You expected something simple from me? .never.

Back to daydreaming about the dining area. It'll come to me. Just gotta wait on it, the money that is. What else were you thinking? Now, now, you know I'm always on an extreme budget, but I want to break the rules so badly!!

Dining Room Dilemma

Who knew that dining rooms could be so expensive to furnish? It doesn't help that I give myself little to no budget or that I'm a little picky when it comes to this area of the house! The formals are my project that I'm working on this week. Since the living is somewhat complete, I'm now on to the dining area. This is the only purchase I have made. I do love it though & am excited for it's arrival. It's from GreatChandeliers.com. You know, I love sparklies so who wouldn't guess that I'd hang one of these babies. It figures a lot of the dining room pictures I had saved during my internet scavenger hunts were only saved because of the lighting choice.

Below are a few inspiring pictures for the room, as I work to get the look for less. Our dining area is quite small - 10x 11 with no windows so this is more of a difficult space to work with than these beauties.

YAY! You have NO idea... I wanted a light grey grout initially, but after I ran all around town yesterday afternoon looking for some, I found out it was a special order kind of thing. So, white it will be, but complete it will be as well! Hopefully, we can get started on the flooring this week so we can get the toilet off of the back patio. I'm sure golfers think we're the ghetto house in the neighborhood with all of the "stuff" hanging out on the patio.

Speak 2009

This past week was not a easy week to get through. A lyric from the music junkie - I've never been so alone, and I've never been so alive was my theme. However, one super amazing highlight came on Saturday!! I had been invited to Speak 2009, with a girlfriend that I work with. The thought of being in a building full of estrogen, left me with the thought of not being able to say NO quickly enough. But thankfully I thought before I spoke and checked through to ensure that I didn't have a last minute party on Saturday afternoon, and then I couldn't say yes quickly enough. Let me tell you, it was amazing. It's 100% difficult for me to step out of my comfort zone and do something like this. I can (now) easily say that betrayal by women is something that comes often in life for me. Do you really think I want to be around a bunch of them? No, but let's differentiate...these women are not those women and forgiveness can release so many harbored emotions and feelings. I digress...and get back on track!

Let me tell you, it was such an awesome time, so awesome that it carried me through the remainder of a disastrous day. Lifting your hands and praising alongside a co-worker that's doing the exact same thing...tell me that's not just an awesome feeling. We listened to two speakers that morning. Janay McDonald, who's an amazing woman and great communicator, spoke on being careful with your mouth. Your ministry can't be effective if you babble on, gossip or say something of no value one minute and then talk about the love of Christ the next. This is something I've definitely worked on this past year. I think for me it wasn't talking about others, it was being "an ear," a crutch rather for someone to speak to and I've learned being a rock for someone in a time of need is different from being an enabler day to day. Yes, I still have moments where I don't quite catch my tongue, so don't let me fool you into thinking that I'm completely above this. Then we had a short break (in which I found the cutest shoes in the clothing swap store...benefitting a local women's shelter...and set them behind the counter for later). Lisa Young, was the next speaker. Let me tell you, as much as she says this isn't me, this is not my comfort zone, she's such a great speaker. She moreso gave us a charge to leave with: to discover our best self, live it, and influence those around us in positive ways. We each have a purpose and plan, no matter how much we talk ourselves out of believing so, we're guilty as charged: to speak the Word and live in It. Side note: we were able to score some major loot as after TPTB dismissed us, they let us know that they would give us a trash bag and that we could put anything in it for a grand total of $10!!! Talk about a party! Now, that's my kind of party! I think I scored about 500 beans worth of goods.

No Pain, No Gain

My left index finger nuckle is extremely swollen and bruised & there's no one to blame but myself. We removed the tile flooring last night from the bath so that our tiler could finish up in the upcoming days. However, I probably missed the chisel a good 20 times and hit my hand instead. Smarty pants!! That's what I get for not doing much this week; I've completely lost my coordination within a few days. That excuse would work if I actually had any to begin with. But, the promise of flooring on the horizon is music to my ears and medication to my hand.

Oh, and I just placed these oh-so-pretty perfume bottles from Pottery Barn in my shopping cart! (Hi Hubby, hope you like them!) They have a classic flair about them that I find so appealing and would fit perfectly almost anywhere. I'd been trying to hunt some down for a while, but could only find those that were extremely way out of my price range. They would come in handy now that we're without a shower. However, I did hop in last night and omgoodness, elated I was - I was about to erupt in song...hopefully the puddle dries quickly! The sink was beginning to wear on me. I can't wait for this room to be complete. I have so much more respect for those living in the "olden days."

It's the Little Things

They tend to all build up. This week has been a rough one for me & it's not even half-way finished. I've been thisclose to giving up on just about everything that I've worked so hard on. I'm thankful for a God that is loving and gracious & ALWAYS there. He has spoken through that radio so much within the past couple of days. (Sometimes I wonder what the songwriter went through to get those lyrics.) He's in control - there is a purpose that it's unraveling and hurting. Something great is destined to come from this. I just have to keep trusting Him. A book that I was reading has a quote that is repeated throughout (& I wondered if I'd ever be able to memorize it). I still may have not gotten it right, but it's the point that counts.

I'm am wonderfully made, fully pleasing, totally accepted, and completely perfect in Christ.

When I decided to make a change, I didn't quite realize that people would despise it. Now, I know many people hate change, but I didn't even begin to think that they wouldn't like my change. I'm greatly surprised that those who I thought would be more supportive seemed to either throw fits or disappear all in all. My counselor and I were able to talk this through. He mentioned that people aren't going to like that they can't run over you anymore or that you won't compromise yourself. And now more than ever, I see truth in this. Change can be lonely, and you've got to watch out for the snakes that will sneak in and still try to control you to where they're comfortable living (trying desperately to avoid a domino effect). They're there! I've found a few! But, I'm elated to know that I've got a friend, confidant, and rock in Christ; One who is eternal, the same God, but a God of change. He's there!

It's not hard to trust when you recognize what beautiful creatures He makes. I'll leave you with this, a portrait that I plan to hang in our office. Butterflies are so appropriate for those who let go, and let God. He takes these gross catepillars and forms them into this...

It's so rainy outside. We're actually supposed to receive 4-6 inches, which is quite a bit for us. I'm definitely thankful for these days (that I'm inside) of rain since we're generally designated a drought zone...

However, I'd much, much, much rather be here, in this beautiful room, all cozied up...

Out of Order

I believe I mentioned that we were experiencing a few hiccups in an earlier post this week. We don't like hiccups - just ask Bryan (he used to get very annoyed with me when I got them). Our major hiccup - a puddle of water in the hallway that poor Sydney kept getting the blame for. Don't worry, she was never disciplined, as I knew that puppies don't play where they've used the potty. Our major cause for concern was that the foundation pipes had broken. Our "neighbor" (the empty lot) had torn down the house on the lot when he bought the place because the pipes had busted. We can't wait for the day when he builds, might I add & we want to split the cost of the fence.

We had a plumber out on Wednesday to determine exactly what the problem was. The conclusion: a busted shower pan & an advisory warning not to use it until it's replaced. This presents a problem for us: we had just started on the guest bathroom... My major thing before we bought the house was to have the guest bath ready to go when we moved in...every single person gave me a silly look that I had told. I'd call it a premonition now, wouldn't you say? Now we have two bathrooms that are "out of order." Babies & puppies are super cute in sinks - adults not so much. So we're kicking it into turbo gear to get the guest bath completed so that we can start on the master.

My muscles are achy this week. I've gotten a great workout painting the formals. Up & down the ladder, over and over again. And, I've got lovely allergies from the dust on the carpet I'm sure... just more of a reason to get wood floors. ;) This week at work has been a bit tense with the market and security reasons (I'm the only one visible in this hallway & that causes some discomfort when people send weird, crazy letters to those on the floor). Right now, I'm wishing I were soaking in a tub...with bubbles, and a great design book to get lost in.

We're loving the change of season; warmer air, green grass, a beauty of a view, and birdies serenading us by the day. I do believe Sydney & P-nut agree as well. We always thought it was our little piece of country in the city, being positioned on the largest course in North Texas. However, I don't think we were quite prepared for all of our "friends" that would be joining us. Take a look for yourself!

Sydney enjoys smelling the grass daily - don't ask! She's got the best coloring for a doggy photo shoot.

P-nut thinks he's in heaven - he can mark anywhere and everywhere. Actually, a fence was one of our top priorities when we first bought the place. We bought a vanilla house, but we didn't realize that white hides a multitude of sins. So, when we actually moved into the place, we decided that the fence would most likely end up a summer project and we'd hop on making this a home (oh, the day when it will feel like it will be glorious). However, P-nut loves to party with everyone!! We've found him on the fairway a couple of times.

This guy & his friend are hopping to & fro every time we pull into the drive. I start singing the little Peter Cottontail jingle in my head. He planted himself in the same spot all day one Saturday & didn't move a hare! P-nut was within inches of him at one point, and the little guy just sat there - apparently they had a late night bunny party & he needed to catch up on some much needed rest. Please don't ask how many times I called Bryan concerned for the bunny's health!

And this guy! Gross! I've never in my life seen such a thing! YUCK! A good three inches of a snail!

And duckies!! Yay for them! Back in February/March we received quite a bit of rain & found these two lovebirds upon our return from a long workday. We quickly annoyed eachother by saying "Duck, Duck Goose" to the pups for the remainder of the evening.

Oh and we have lizards, chameleons, and B's even found a little garden snake while cleaning up the shrubbery.

What's Your Style?

So I've never been able to define my style because I think almost anything is great as long as it goes in a certain space. The harmony that's created when different styles marry eachother is so me, but I'm certainly not eclectic. I found a style quiz on Sproost & it seems to be pretty dead on. I took it a couple of times, as pictures tend to change from quiz to quiz, but I've always had the same top result, with two accent styles that tend to play switcheroo... Last night, I had Bryan take a quiz because I almost knew what style he was but wanted some confirmation. So... our results:

Rachel:
Hollywood Glam - I think almost anyone that knows me could pinpoint this as my style without even seeing me with an unlimited budget. I love luxurious, glammy interiors. I'd hang a chandelier almost anywhere, really. My supplemental accents switch out between Modern & Rustic Revival. I tend to be clutter free (just don't look in my closet) so that's where the modern came from. As for the rustic revival, I think that's because I L.O.V.E. zebra, hides, and dark antiquey woods... This is why I'm currently not a fan of our den either; it's too "french rustic" for me - it has some major touch-ups to be done to create a glammy space.

Bryan:
Modern - Sometimes I tend to think Bryan will pick the ugliest thing in the store just because it has clean lines; not hard, but clean. He tends to be clutter free - ie. he would have one piece of furniture in a room and call it a day, just so that he doesn't have clutter. His supplemental accents were Cottage Chic - which doesn't surprise me either. The boy loves the beach.

Lovely Day

I'm currently pining for a window since it is such a pretty day outside. Such a shame, this building has wrap-around windows and I'm stuck under 19 spotlights (how's that for wearing your skin down). Here's a picture from one of our trips to San Antonio a couple of years ago that I took. Looking at pretty outdoorsy pics helps me get through my workday on days like this.

Back to my brightly lit dungeon.

I promise I'll post some pics this eve. It was a late night for the two of us big kids; even the "little" things seem to take longer than expected!

We're back - not that the first blog ever really got off to a great start because the URL was so confusing. I deleted it not knowing I could move it to this URL so all is gone...again, not that there was much to begin with.

We're (I'm) excited to start this journey and see where it takes us. You'll hear/read about life in general, housing projects, inspirations, etc. Bear with me as I'm just starting to get the hang of this!!
